Local to be Removed for Odyssey Expansion


I managed to talk to Jon “CCP Unifex” Lander and Kristoffer “CCP Soundwave” Touborg about the meaning behind 'shaking up the players,' and was surprised when they replied with the following:

“During PAX East I talked about players joining EVE Online for the sense of wonder and unknown, a sense of when they undock they don't know what they are going to encounter. EVE has grown dramatically over the years, and some game mechanics are outdated and actually cause the opposite of that 'unknown' feeling players like.

Simply put, we will be removing the local chat channel. In the early years of the game, local was necessary so that players would have a way to actually interact with each other. But the game has evolved and the purpose of local is almost exclusively used for no-effort intelligence gathering. There are so many other methods for players to connect and communicate with each other ranging from VOIP programs to forums. Removing local seemed to be the most logical choice.” - CCP Unifex

How do you think this will affect the players who rely on local for their day to day activities?

“Well it will be a shock to everyone for sure, but EVE players have demonstrated a strong ability to adapt. Granted there will be those players who can't function without local channel and may choose to leave the game. EVE Online is a game for hardcore players, which I touched on at PAX East, and we want to keep it that way. If some players leave, they are most likely better off playing one of those other MMOs where being a coward is more accepted.” - CCP Unifex

When was it decided removing local was a goal?

“The need to removal local has become more and more apparent over the last few years. It is a direct cause for the stagnation we are currently seeing in null security space and the low activity in low security space. You can't make any real strategic movements anywhere without it being reported over five different intel channels, everyone going to red alert, and getting completely safe before you even leave your home system.” - CCP Soundwave

Are you worried this will nerf the psychological warfare involved with AFK cloakers?

“Point out to me a person who has been harmed by an AFK cloaker and I will point out a person who has no business playing this game.” - CCP Soundwave

Ouch. Fair enough. So will the removal of local be for null space or empire space as well?

“All space.” - CCP Soundwave

Are you worried that the removal of local will make all space too similar to what players find in wormhole space?

“Not at all. Unknown space, or wormhole space, has many unique features such as system wide effects , no cynos and the wormholes themselves. Players having to make strategic decisions based on what can actually go into the wormhole and the danger of it collapsing.” - CCP Soundwave

What about a revamp on the directional scanner to be more intuitive and such for players who actively gather intelligence?

“Currently the directional scanner is slated for a revamp for early next year, but we are confident players will adapt just fine until then. We might have something on the test server at the end of this year for players to test and give feedback.” - CCP Unifex

I tried to get more information on POSes and interface changes, but they were reluctant to reveal anything more. I suppose we'll have to wait until Fanfest to get all the juicy details. Looks like Odyseey is going to be one hell of a game changer. A game changer we desperately need and - at least for me - one I welcome with open arms.
