B-R5RB: The Biggest Battle in All Of EVE

Avatar
Well looking at PL's history they will prolly rejoin the CFC soon. Through out their history they always join the strongest so they wont appear weaker. Check for yourself ;)
Avatar
so , what cfc can do without russians block? ,it's easy to have balls when you're sure to have numbers.so guys , yeah great fight , i was here. But if i take a look to eve-kill, i can see , cfc + russ +black legion etc.Shame on you Cfc , where are you gone? the news goons morons forgot your history
Avatar
PL Killed a lot of titans today. Good Fight, Thanks for bringing it.
Avatar
Oh, for the good old days, when goons stood proud and independent, with no connection to any russians whatsoever.
Avatar
Goons fights in the shade of others. Have been like that for a long time. Either they ally up and pay others to fight for them. Meanwhile the Guys they get on their side hits the news more often. Helpful in more ways than one, yes? Happened last year, happened this year.
Avatar
Your titan and super intel spreadsheet actually *shows* people who have lost titans in the last few months who were sitting in replacements in Ammamake under 12 hours later -- I don't know why you would make such a barefaced lie here.Edit: Before you do that thing where you intentionally take someone's words out of context, we're talking about PL pilots here.
Avatar
I for a fact know one of my buddies in PL holds 3 titans. While one is lost now, he have 2 on holding toons. Dont think its hes though, maybe alliance dont know.
Avatar
Mmmmmmmm no, a *skilled* toon is worth more than its equivalent skillpoint-plex value in the character bazaar and is usually sold to blues if possible.Edit: Actually there are a number of folks who have been trying to get / have been getting a Pokemon -- 'Gotta catch 'em all'
Avatar
A hint; Check who owns the station and holds sovereignty :)
Avatar
come on. there are always some spare titans on each side and you can always find somebody in your coalition who wanna get rid of his titan. but stop the story of "PL has a huge stockpile of spare titans", they dont. nobody can cover the losses in this battle. and no, PL didn't engage in this battle with the knowledge "now we will welp our titan fleet but we don't care about it". you can welp a drake fleet or a battleship fleet, some coalitions can also welp a dread fleet but nobody can welp a titan fleet.sure, they can rebuild it, like everybody else will do it.problem for PL is, they bleeded. alot of people will jump onto the train that are not part of any coalition and will start grabbing PL moons. thats the normal way of life when big heros starts bleeding, they have to pay their old bills and PL has a lot of old bills to pay.
Avatar
Do we have a more or less accurate battle report yet?
Avatar
100 dead titans is a 10% loss by the last figures CCP confirmed a little over a year ago.
Avatar
Who ever will do that will need at least one more day for all of those kms to load up on killboard. It will be bitch to do that ,but I hope someone will on end make it happen as testament about this fight.
Avatar
We've been practically begging for it for weeks now, might not have gone as we would have hoped, but dead titans all around makes for a good fight in my eyes.
Avatar
When I said stockpile I meant somethign like 10-15 titans. Sure no one expect them to have 80 stockpiled. But I would find very unlikely for them to not have 10.
Avatar
Yeah, you will probably still have a least 4 of them!
Avatar
It was nice when you were fighting Solar and they were standing alone against you ?I dont care about any of this blocks, but seriously could you write more dumb thing than you did?EvE works that way for most ,bigger numbers wins so it is non shocker. You can now roleplay Sparta thing and what not ,but you got dunked hard and who cares tbh. This fights always end with winner ,also someone need to be on loosing side.Imo this was something that will be talked about for a long time so I guess on what ever side you were you should be proud.
Avatar
- one hundred-?!Wow!That's between 5 trillion and 22 trillion ISK... that is just staggering. And that's just the titans.Sweet mother mercy, this is going to be one for the books."Hey, there's a thing going on in the staging system. Everybody gear up. This might be a big one." 24 hours later "What -the hell- just happened?!"100 titans. Jesus....

They could not have waited 24 hours to have their slug fest? It had to be on the very eve of the update?

At the peak there was 0.7M USD on field easily.

A friend of mine asked me to explain today's events (they have only heard about Eve, not played), but this article left them mostly confused about who all the different actors were, which made it hard to follow the narrative.I appreciate the articles here. I just want to point out that this one seems written for newer players / non-players (and it makes sense for an Eve news site to have such an article) but there's very little in the way of concessions to help that audience understand what's going on.A key part of communicating the events is establishing who the parties involved are, but the article does very little to promote that understanding. One side is portrayed at various times as Pandemic Legion, PL, N3PL, Nulli Secunda, and S2N. While accurate, the relationships between these entities isn't always made clear, and it's not even explicit that they're all on the same side. The opposing side, as Russians, CFC, and RUS, is better, but it's still not as clear as it might be.
Avatar
Which is what I meant. It's not like Japan knew what was coming until they... found out.Anyways, Dead Titans ensure a happy Camper.Dead Titans and... this: http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_de...
Avatar
Well, a little less of a "what just happened?" and more of an inexorable slide from "this may happen" to "it's happening."You have to understand: from an n3/pl point of view, we saw your (cfc dtf) numbers 10 days ago. Think less of chickens running around with heads chopped off and more like watching a slow fifteen-hour marathon of Holocaust documentaries.
Avatar
Fuckgoons and all, but The Mittani does well when it comes to presenting events factually when interviewing and answering questions for larger media outlets.
Avatar
CCP may well make a memorial on that grid. Seriously, how cool would over a hundred titans scattered about look?
Avatar
I assume this is meant as a joke?Goons 1st allied Russians back in 06, they have almost always been allied with Russians in one form or another

From the perspective of a wspace guy there are only positive things to this:when goons take all N3 sov now Im going to be able to shoot em anywhere I go!

It's n3/pl, not N3/PL.

Biggest/largest amount of ISK loss. Biggest/largest in terms of firepower on the field. Only thing that's not the biggest is the raw number of characters in system.

Alliance owned titan holding characters. Plex an account, buy three titan-sitting capable characters for it. Put each in titans. Let the account lapse until you need the titans for replacements. One of the first PL titan pilots to die in the fight was given a replacement titan and jumped it back into the fight. I'm confident GSF does the same.Smaller alliances won't have the means to stockpile titans though and with CFC holding a vast amount of uncontested space, the losses for them are slightly less severe as they are in a better place to cook up replacement titans.

This should not be called the biggest battle in EVE, because as we all know more people were NOT in B-R5 fighting than were inside it, because the Rus/CFC decided to order their subcapital fleets to other systems. They did that because they knew from HED-GP that to let those 2,000 pilots join the battle directly would doom the server to abysmal performance and crashing, rather than 'just' soul crushing lag.So don't over-sell this battle. CCP will be crowing from the rooftops about how incredibly marvelous it was - but actually, when more players were unable to be there than were there, it was simply not the genuinely epic battle it should have been. It was capitals vs capitals, but in all the EVE movies the capitals have their subcap fleets - they don't have to go sit on a station or gate someplace because the 10 year old programming is too broken to let them come and play too.Don't pretend the game is perfect, or you will give CCP the excuse to not fix the threading and data processes for null fleet fights for another 10 years. Again.
Avatar
Don't. Behind asbestos, blood and thunder are the largest contributing factors to mesothelioma.
Avatar
Gary "Dipshit" Bell knows all of course...
Avatar
Except that the capital numbers were never just slightly In the cfc's favour, they had 2 titans for every titan n3 had.
Avatar
Fresh tears in the morning. Breakfast of champions.
Avatar
So what you are saying is this patrticular battle was fought in several systems. The main line in BR with secondary lines in the nulli and ncdot staging systems to prevent sub capital reinforcement.Right this wasn't the biggest battle at all.
Avatar
There are in fact, 3, supercaps in Provi.

Heres how I read your comment. "CFC didnt play our way so screw the entire battle's so called claim to fame." How do you put so much spin on things with a straight face?

Lets be honest.Sooner or later, a sandbox game that can actually give the players a proper 1000men battle will come out, then Eve will fade out.At that point, people will look back at the madness of tidi and be unable to even understand how on earth they ever allowed themselves to waste so much time on something that only gives back frustration.Big war blobs in Eve is torture.

Doesn't make him an idiot for wanting something different. Some of us just don't have the time for these slow mo battles. Such is life.

This is not really true. In 2004 major software design shops still had no idea that multicore processors would soon dominate. Phil Taylor was Microsoft's Program Manager for their last big flight simulator, FSX. Here's a 2007 blog entry he wrote about the situation. He says while FSX was being developed during much of 2004 that multicore PCs were a mere "variant" on the main development path. Everyone to that point was simply counting on faster CPUs with higher GHz. He even cites a couple of references to back up his contention. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ptaylo...FSX and its successor, Prepar3d, still suffer from their single-threaded roots. FSX was written to be primarily single-thread because everyone expected GHz to keep going up. This could be what happened at CCP.
Avatar
He's right. You're right too, however, in that CCP is responsible for where their game performance is today. Where they really failed is with their design methodology. Object Oriented Programming's big strengths are code re-use and ease of maintenance. They somehow fucked up with Python, an OO language. When you get to 10 years down the road and nobody can understand the code any longer then something has failed along the way.I think they just use that as an excuse. The POS code is too hard! Recoding the Corporate Roles is too hard! Nobody understands how it works anymore! There's your bollox right there. They're too lazy, incompetent or broke to hire the caliber of people needed to get the job done.
Avatar
You call 10% TiDi "working"?
Avatar
Titan vs Titan heavyweight battles are awesome, maybe the only really awesome thing about EVE.Then along comes 10% TiDi which makes it impossible to cycle my weapons more than once an hour. TBH that sounds a whole lot less like awesome and a whole lot more like a cripple fight.
Avatar
Regardless of which side you are a fanboy of this was an impressive show of courage from both sides. Good fight, well done CFC/Friends and better luck next time N3/PL. All hail Provi overlords!

There WERE domi fleets in system, but they held drones and instead chose to neut so as not to crash the node. Very wise decision indeed.

THIS GUY. Why isn't he called CCP Tidihero, or at least on the CSM?
Avatar
I completely disagree with your morale concern. Fights this big raise morale on all sides because of how simply fun they are. I've talked to a lot of PL/N3 guys today, and morale doesn't seem to be an issue. Everyone likes good fights. Not everyone whines like a little bitch when they don't win every fight.
Avatar
There is a guy in nc. That had 4 revenants. He only has 2 now since he gave on to his CEO and sold on to a PL person. So having some spare titans sitting around is not out of the realm of possibilities.

I guess the Goons finally got their wish of taking currency out of the game.

Avatar
Unhuh, from what I can tell most of the people saying this was super fun are looking at the idea of the fight rather than the actual fight. I was there in a Dread and let me tell, sure getting on tons of Titan mails is cool and all, but waiting 15-30 minutes for guns to cycle, shooting at the same thing for 2 hours, and waiting while your screen randomly freezes isn't fun. I know 5 or 6 Euro guys who actually log out knowing they'd lose their Super simply because they were so frustrated with trying to get to the edge of a bubble at 1/10 speed . . . that isn't fun.You don't have to agree with me, but you do have to ask yourself if you're letting bias for one coalition effect your judgement here. Either way we'll know soon enough.
Avatar
currency is currently nicely printed on plex market
Avatar
Well, then they have a least 14 left.
Avatar
Just To clarify we had 5 or so in the fight, only *losing* 1. We are small. :)Just pointing out, there's lots of groups that have spares I'm sure most are much better prepared then us. And not pl side but cute assumptions.
Avatar
FFS, TiDi is not the lag monster, it is what allows the game to be playable when the lag monster comes to visit.

True or not, you're still an idiot.

That's way out of date. One ALLIANCE has gotten at least 2 (I think maybe 3 now? I honestly don't remember).Just go check the trade forums for the last 6 months or so.

Just got to thinking, making an article on this for the non-eve crowd may be a good idea, a lot of people are going to hear about this and not know what the fuck. Describing who's who and what not.I'd thought about penning it myself, but I just don't have all the info.
Avatar
yes. this battle sounds epic. Do i want to know more? YES!

I've been re-watching entourage the past 2 weeks and I've been waiting for a ninjaturtle post so I could do that.

I can tell you that bias isn't really an issue for me because I don't take my video games seriously. Easy to say, but just take my word for it for the purposes of this discussion. I will say, that I completely agree with what you said about peoples thoughts on the 'theory' of a fight vs 'execution'. The TiDi is just fucking painful. I'm also one of the people that isn't humored by CCP's "Soul Crushing Lag" notification either. I know it is soul crushing lag. You (CCP) being snarky and actually calling it that on an error message is borderline insulting. I'm with you here 100%.To be clear: nothing about 'participating' in these fights is fun. However, I, and most of the people I've spoken with, find the idea and aftermath are absolutely amazing on many different levels as a player from economic stimulation to bringing positive attention to the game, etc.

Your task is clear: "Operation Killboard Red".
Avatar
I'm afraid this will escalate in a lineless war were the resources of CFC and others will be severely taxed and division and demoralization among the alliances will incur. It is inevitable. This is were old Battle tactics of World Wars are no longer valid. This is due to NPC sov in various place of Null Sec. More successful campaigns will be waged based on Guerilla warfare to which will make safe havens for Industrial operations very vulnerable to attacks. Well CFC you started this war and now your Control of EVE will fall apart by your own hands. Paraphrased an old saying by the Romans is "The bigger the Empire the easier it will collapse". Like BOB and Atlas, you are next.
Avatar
You can use parallel programming for tasks that can be parallelized, but no amount of cores helps in crunching through data in which the next operation depends on the previous one. Such as encrypting a file where the key for every block contains the hash of a previous block. Keeping track of the state of a solar system is the same thing, there can only be one definite state of the grid and the database, and processing events has to take place in order.Furthermore, the fact that everybody on the grid needs to know the actions of everybody else makes it a task of O(n^2) complexity. I.e. with 100 players pressing a button it would need to process and pass 100^2=10k events, while with 4000 players they'd need to process 4000^2 = 16 million events, a vastly greater number.

of the 59 that died, 51 were PL and NCdot who are each rich enough to reimburse them and Nulli lost four and are rich enough to reimburse those which leaves maybe four not reimbursed (that we know of). Of course most of this is peripheral since replacing the ship is far harder than giving the pilot the isk.

It's the "theory" that has all the romance and adventure for those of us on the outside, looking in, absolutely. The fact that this happened and that people are talking about it, and that a sandbox battle was significant enough that it's in the gaming news and has forums and discussions buzzing is pretty friggin epic. I've been playing computer games since Star Trek on a CP/M machine when I was in junior high and am just amazed. Wish I had the time to even start playing a game like this. The battle must have been incredibly frustrating, but I tip my hat to all of you who were involved and took the time to fight it. It's one of those gaming moments that I look at in amazement. Similar to the first time I saw a fully-rendered 3D game in which I and my friends could walk around as a participant.EVE now becomes part of my "world news," and I will keep up on it like any other current event. Amazing. Prosperity and good wishes to all.

We know that The Mittani is a past master at intel and off-line shenanigans. It's what makes all of us love him so much. However, he doesn't have a monopoly on hijinks Somewhere in EVE there is a lever waiting to be pulled.
Avatar
I totally agree i mean even the CHINESE re-lauched their version of eve and they've got less people in their dev team than ccp in iceland and their other offices. The answer lyes in ccp focusing on other products such as valkrye and dust. All those devs that could be focused on making eve truely amazing. I mean we're not getting modular poses we're not getting a re-work of sov. What we are getting is more bloody stargates and mobile deployables ffs.
Avatar
I agree but what can we as the players do CCP are NOT listening to us again on this front like ghst said we've already been told we're NOT getting a re-work of sov or modular pos's any time soon.
Avatar
Let's face it we need more than comments on mittens website we need action in the CSM, and short of another summer of rage incident ccp aint going to stop their long term goal of building player stargates etc.

I have a feeling this is the major reason Goonswarn want to take more currency out of the game.I realised this was their intention when I was suicide ganked in high-sec in my mining boat for no other reason than I had been chatting in a public channel about my activities. It was the only gank that occurred in that sector, and they sought me out specifically, even though I had not antagonised any of the Goons at any time. So that was an obvious conclusion to draw.

On the one-year anniversary of the Battle of Asakai, New Eden again exploded in spaceship violence.

The battle in B-R has already surpassed all records set before, with over 70 titans killed and trillions of ISK in damages. As with most big fights in EVE, it wasn't planned-- but it's been brewing for a while.

This fight is the latest battle in a war that's been going since approximately Halloween. Between all the alliances, coalitions, and coalitions of coalitions, this war has dragged in almost everyone who lives in null security space, and it's been grinding on for the past several months with a few back-and-forth engagements, minor sov trades, and failed staging system headshots. With the last major engagement dampened by server woes, all parties were spoiling for a fight.

Ostensibly, this fight was for control of a single system. To maintain one's sovereignty over a system requires that one pay certain maintenance fees, and Pandemic Legion (PL) messed this up. The system affected? Their staging system for the current war, B-R5RB in Immensea.

Whoever's Territorial Claim Unit could survive the eight-hour online time would have control of the system. If CFC/RUS succeeded, they would be able to prevent N3PL from accessing a great deal of their strategic assets and war material deployed to this particular part of the galaxy.

Once the TCU onlining was decided, the fight just became about carnage: who could kill the most the fastest. The fleets committed by both sides represent a staggering amount of time, effort, and ISK. Each titan costs about 100 billion ISK (up to 160 or even 220b for particularly expensive fits), which can be purchased for about $3,000 USD by buying game time and selling it to other players for ISK. More than that, though, to build a titan requires several weeks and a nice quiet undisturbed area of space, something harder to find in the current climate. Supercarriers are similarly challenging. Dreadnaughts and carriers, while not as difficult to build, still represent a significant investment of effort on the part of an industrialist somewhere.

For this reason, all of the alliances involved have stored up money, items, and ships, to be used in the event of something going horribly wrong. Once the system control was established, the fight became about bleeding those stocks dry. The kills made here decide not only this war, but the next, and the next after that. Those are the stakes with both sides committing fully.

The battle itself started with the sov bill screw-up. A scout went to check out what had happened, and discovered Nulli Secunda (S2N) quietly re-onlining their Territorial Control Unit, hoping to maintain control of the system. With an hour left to go on the online time, the Russian alliances dropped a capital fleet on the station, capturing it and preventing N3PL from accessing it anymore. They began onlining their own TCU to secure system control while going to destroy the S2N one.

N3PL countered by going all-in and dropping their carrier and supercarrier fleet on top of the Russian fleet, hoping to drive them off and maintain system control. In response, the Russians escalated, bringing in more ships and their CFC allies. Both sides were now fully committed, with warp disruption bubbles ensuring extraction would be difficult.

Time dilation kicked in, with 10 seconds of real time passing for every one second in game. Both sides began trading titan kills every hour, when their titans' doomsday weapons were ready to fire again. The CFC/RUS fleet had a slight edge in numbers and in in titan kills, but it was a close fight. Eventually, their TCU onlined, but if N3PL were able to rout them, they would be able to retake the system without issue.

The turning point was in whose US timezone reinforcements were able to dominate. PL didn't see the additional numbers they were hoping for, and the CFC locked down potential systems for reinforcements, making N3PL backup challenging. Eventually, the trades stopped being quite so even, until finally N3PL found themselves unable to kill titans at all. They gave the order to attempt to disengage.

At this point, the battle became less of a fight, more of a slaughter. The CFC continues to work their way through titan kills, and plans to do so until downtime, moving on to supercarriers if they run out. Both sides have lost an incredible number of dreadnaughts, and the price of Tritanium has been creeping upwards, anticipating the flurry of industrial production to come.

While the final kill numbers aren't in yet, this fight has already blown past every single record for damage done in EVE. Uemon, the previous recordholder, only saw 12 titans killed and 1T of ISK value lost.
